As the sage Lao Tzu left the Chinese kingdom astride a swaying water buffalo, he gave the border guard a small book of 81 short poems called the Tao Te Ching, or The Classic of The Way and its Power.

For hundreds of years, seekers and the curious have found reminders of the inter-connectedness of all things and the virtue of alignment with Nature in this classic text.

Whether by reading, listening, reciting, playing, singing or dancing, the Tao Te Ching has time-tested wisdom to offer us all for today’s challenges, and into the future.

This new version for music lovers and musicians presents Songs of the Tao Te Ching composed by Vito di Bona alongside John McDonald’s lyrical translation of the text.

It is hoped this might bring the spirit of these works out in new arenas and ways, and help the wisdom find new audiences to their and society’s collective benefit.

The tao that can be described
is not the eternal Tao.
The name that can be spoken
is not the eternal Name.

The nameless is the boundary of Heaven and Earth.
The named is the mother of creation.

Freed from desire, you can see the hidden mystery.
By having desire, you can only see what is visibly real.

Yet mystery and reality
emerge from the same source.
This source is called darkness.

Darkness born from darkness.
The beginning of all understanding.
